About Us

Fall is here, summer is on its way out, and Meadows Farms Winchester has all of your fall garden and decorating needs from watering supplies, mulches and soils, sod, blooming perennials (which we restock for fall plantings ), flowering shrubs, trees, fungicides, insecticides, weed killers, fertilizers and everything else you may need to protect your investment in your landscape. With fall arriving so are all the beautiful autumn colors, mums, pansies, winter cabbage and kale, straw bales, scarecrows, and of course the area’s best pumpkins. We also continue shipping fresh blooming Annuals to freshen up your landscaping throughout the fall. Stop by and get advice and suggestions to keep your landscaping beautiful.

Nursery Manager: John Gebhardt

Part of the Meadows Farms Team: Since 1991

  • Hobbies and Interests: John has been growing orchids as a hobby for many years, former President of the Lord Fairfax Orchid Society in Winchester and winner of several awards for his orchids at the National Capital Orchid Society show and sale at the National Arboretum located in Washington D.C. held annually on Columbus Day weekend.
  • Hometown: Germantown, MD
  • Favorite Plant: Some of John’s favorite landscape plants include but are not limited to Dawn Redwoods, many different varieties of Japanese maples, Hinoki Cypress, Park Bark maples, Horse Chestnuts, Clump River Birch, Sweetbay Magnolia, Nandina, as well as numerous perennial plants that we sell.

First Assistant Manager: Jason Cowne

Part of the Meadows Farms Team: Hired as a laborer – Winchester 1996; 2nd Assistant – Winchester 1998; Sr. 1st Assistant – Frederick, MD 1999. Worked in the industry for outside companies before returning to the Meadows Farms family in 2013.

  • Education: Certificate – Professional Landscape Management 1999. Bachelor’s degree in progress – Environmental Science at Lord Fairfax Community College.
  • Hobbies and Interests: Whitewater boating of any kind (kayaking, rafting, canoeing), camping, backpacking, hiking, gardening, and improving the pond and wetlands at my home.
  • Hometown: Gerrardstown, WV
  • Favorite Plant: Taxodium distichum (Bald Cypress), Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Fernspray’ (Fernspray Cypress)

  • Education: Graduated from Handley High School in 1999
  • Hobbies and Interests: Working outside with plants is a hobby I enjoy at home just as much as I do at work. All of my children take an interest in it as well so we all learn a lot together.

  • Favorite Plant: Aquilegia

Second Assistant Manager: Ethan Legge

Employed with Meadows Farms: Since May 2019

Education: Graduated from Handley High School in 2010/Graduated Shepherd University 2020 with a BA in Political Science
Hobbies and Interests: Hobby is music(Mostly guitar and vocals). Interest is business – all the ins and outs of running one, along with understanding how a business fits into a market.

Local Happenings

Winchester is home to the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. This will be the 94th annual festival. More than 250,000 people will attend the 6 days of events. This year “the Bloom” will be held April 23rd – May 2nd, 2021. The festival has been attended by many celebrities in the past including Lucille Ball, Adam West, Martha Stewart, and Dan Aykroyd just to name a few. The 6 days of the festival have many events and entertainment to keep everyone busy. A Firemans parade(featuring over 170 firetruck and squad units), The Grand Feature parade(includes floats, bands, special units, and official cars). The parade usually lasts about 3 hours. Weekend in the park held at Jim Barnett Park features over 250 craft and food vendors as well as live music. Handley High School is the spot to be for the Fireworks Concert. So come on out to Winchester and celebrate spring with us here in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.

March 6th — The Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardeners Association will host a “Gardening in the Shenandoah Valley Symposium”. NSVMGA’s Gardening in the Valley Symposium, a day of education and fun with fellow gardeners, is March 6, 2021, a virtual event. All proceeds benefit the Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardeners Association will again host Garden Fest featuring an extensive plant sale.

GardenFest, a day of gardening fun, education, and shopping, is typically held on the first Saturday in June at Belle Grove Plantation. June 2021’s GardenFest will be a modified and scaled-back event. In its place, there will be an online plant sale. Plants will go on sale in May and in-person pick-up will be on June 4 and 5. Please check back and watch their Facebook for details. Other than the pick-up of pre-purchased plants, there will be no activities at Belle Grove.
