Happenings

We Are Ready to Welcome Spring!

Although it still technically is winter on the calendar, the Mid-Atlantic has experienced an overall warmer winter. However nice this early warm weather feels, the trees, shrubs, and perennials may be confused into budding or blooming early. This also includes the weeds! Now is the time for preventative measures. Crabgrass preventers should be applied now. Two applications in the early spring and one in the fall with Espomas Organic Weed Preventer will help to keep your lawn “more lawn and fewer weeds.” Let us not forget the flower beds and mulched areas around the house. Spreading weed preventers in these areas now while you also spread your fresh mulch will help to control the weeds throughout the season.

Insects also appreciate a warmer winter. Now is a great time to treat any fruit trees or deciduous shrubs with horticultural dormant oil. Dormant oil applied now will help to eradicate any pests before the spring season heats up and the trees flesh out.

Early spring is also a great time to get your seeds started. Already in stock, we have a great selection of vegetable, herb, and flower seeds. We even have a small selection of perennial seeds! Now is the perfect time to start sowing seeds indoors for transplantation outside during May. We carry seed starting soil, starter growing trays, and other seed starting accessories to get you growing!

As March “marches” into April, and the weather starts to creep toward the consistent warmth of summer, we hope that you will drop on by the greenhouse at Great Falls. Every week something new is arriving to help you plant a little happiness!
