Cannot be grown from a seed; it is always propagated by division. The part used for cooking is not the stalks, but the fleshy white part of the stem. Remove any of the grass-like blades from food before consuming, as they can be sharp and hard to swallow.

To height of 3’

Full sun

Perennial in zones 8-11

Medicinal, Culinary

Use in soups and stir-fries; is essential in many Asian dishes. Can use the stalks to make tea. Used extensively in Ayurvedic medicine, particularly to relieve coughs & nasal congestion.
