MY TOP 5 FAVORITE SUMMER BLOOMING PERENNIALS FOR JULY

It is now the end of July, and we are halfway through summer. Typically, the end of July and August can be our hottest and driest months of the year. But, we have many very hardy perennials that love this time of year. It is their time to showcase their unique blooms and eye-catching foliage. So, if you have an interest in adding to your landscape with summer blooming perennials then I strongly suggest that you come see us and let us show you these perennials.

I’ll be honest with you. There are many perennials, and it was hard to select just five to highlight in this blog.

HERE ARE MY TOP FIVE CHOSEN PERENNIALS

ECHINACEA – Coneflower

"Coneflower"

Echinacea comes in an array of colors. One customer shared a photo of her “Cone Flower Garden” with me. She has created a meadow of cone flowers with all the beautiful colors all at once. Echinacea is drought, deer, and heat resistant. Echinacea purpurea is the true native plant for our area. All Echinacea varieties are considered one of the best perennials for our native bees and butterflies.

AGASTACHE – Hummingbird Mint

"Agastache"

Personally, I love all the different varieties of Agastache. With our selection we must have hundreds of bees enjoying themselves on the beautiful flowers. And, it is attractive to butterflies. Because of the smell of the foliage it is deer tolerate. In addition, Agastache is heat and drought resistant.

MONARDA – Bee Balm

"Beebalm"

Monarda is a sun loving, heat tolerant, very hardy perennial. Because of the smell of the foliage it is deer resistant. Bee balm is a great plant for supporting our native bees.

ASCLEPIAS – Butterfly Weed

"butterfly

“Butterfly Weed” Last month I did a blog on this perennial It was my perennial highlight for June. Asclepias is a sun loving, very hardy perennial. This plant is a larval host plant for our monarch butterflies. It is drought, heat, and deer resistant. And, considered to be little to no maintenance.

LAVENDER

"Lavender"

Lavender has beautiful silvery blue foliage with a strong fragrance. Right now it has beautiful, erect lavender/blue flowers. One thing that I learned about lavender over the years is that it needs loose well draining soil. I always killed my lavender because of overwatering. Now, I am successful with growing lavender in containers using a high quality potting soil. Because of the wonderful scent it is deer resistant perennial.
