Spring is finally here to stay and this is such a beautiful time of year for The Great Big Greenhouse when it comes to flowering shrubs, perennials, annuals, and hanging baskets.\u00a0 Our selection is almost overwhelming with all this beauty.\u00a0 And, what a perfect time to have so much color especially with Mother\u2019s Day this coming Sunday.<\/p>\n
The origins of Mother\u2019s Day in the United States date back to the 19th<\/sup>\u00a0century.\u00a0 In the years before the Civil War, Ann Reeves of West Virginia helped start \u201cMothers\u2019 Day Work Clubs\u201d to teach local women how to properly care for their children.\u00a0 By 1912 most states had adopted Mother\u2019s Day as an annual holiday.\u00a0 In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n Since 1914, Mother\u2019s Day traditionally involves presenting moms with flowers, cards, and other gifts.<\/p>\n But, let\u2019s stick with flowers right now.\u00a0 Flowers, especially hardy flowering shrubs and perennials can be a gift that keeps on giving for years to come.\u00a0 As I walked through the nursery I see azaleas, rhododendrons, spirea all in bloom right now.\u00a0 With perennials, we have hundreds of varieties in bloom or coming into bloom.\u00a0 Some perennials in particular that look great for a gift to mom are peonies, salvia, dianthus, gaillardia.\u00a0 They are all in bloom now because this is their time to flower.<\/p>\n Blooming hanging baskets are beautiful \u2013 geraniums, impatiens, begonias, petunias, and a mixed combination of blooming annuals \u2013 make great Mother\u2019s Day gift.<\/p>\n If in doubt, you can get your mother a gift card and bring her to The Great Big Greenhouse and let her make her own personal selection.\u00a0 If I were you I’d offer to do the planting\u2026just saying.<\/p>\n
