OUR MISSION IS TO HAVE ALL YOUR NEW PLANTS PERFORM AND LOOK GREAT
Hindsight is 20/20. I say this because I should have written this blog a few weeks ago. But, there is still a lot of planting going on for the next few months. So, I feel that this blog has merit at this time. Better late than never, right?
Let’s talk about some proper planting techniques to keep in mind when planting. As I mentioned in the heading our mission is for you to be happy and successful with your plant selection.
HERE ARE THE STEPS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN PLANTING
RIGHT PLANT/RIGHT LOCATION
I talk to customers all the time about this topic. I urge every customer to do their homework when it comes to location and plant selection. Is this location sunny or is it shady? What kind of space do you have to be planting? Purpose of this knowledge is to maximize plant vigor and health throughout the seasons. So, soil, amount of sunlight, space and size, hardiness zone, drainage, and soil pH are all paramount for success.
PLANTING HOLE
For both woody shrubs, trees, and herbaceous plants, the planting hole should be dug two to four times wider than the pot or root ball.
PREPARING SOIL
We recommend amending the native soil that you dug from the hole. You want to amend this soil by using organic matter such as planting mix and compost. In addition, we recommend adding some ESPOMA BIO-TONE to the hole.
PROPER DEPTH
You want the plant to be slightly mounded above the existing soil level. Never set the plant too deep in the hole. There is saying in this business: “Plant it high, it won’t die. Plant it low, it won’t grow.” Planting a shrub or tree too deep is a common cause of an early demise.
WATERING
We always recommend to water the plant(s) thoroughly before planting. You don’t want a newly planted plant to dry. Most new plants require watering a couple times a week. Watering is best done as one DEEP soaking to wet the entire soil system.
MULCHING
By having the plant(s) slightly mounded gives you enough room to add mulch around the top of the plant. Mulch should be only 2” to 3” deep at any one time. The purpose of mulch is to held in soil moisture and keep the root system cool. Be sure to keep mulch away from coming in direct contact with the stems of the plant(s). “Stems are stems. Roots are roots.”
WARRANTY
Lastly, I want to share with you our warranty. All our shrubs and trees come with a one year warranty. However—are you aware of our FARMER’S EXTENDED WARRANTY? Following the simple steps of 3 and 4 and you qualify for our SUCCESS PACKAGE and receive 3 YEAR WARRANTY. Along with the plants then you purchase a bag of BIO-TONE, a bag of PLANTING MIX, and a bag of MULCH and you got yourself a 3 year warranty.
