Planting Trees and Shrubs for Energy Control

Correctly placing trees and shrubs in the landscape can significantly reduce the energy required to maintain a comfortable home or office. With fall officially arriving this coming Sunday, September 22nd, you may be thinking and asking yourself, “What do trees and shrubs have to do with the amount of energy I use for my home or office?”

This is a great question! Proper use of deciduous trees and shrubs can modify the climate around your home and reduce heat gains in the summer and heat losses in the winter. It is all about location, location, location.

Shade trees such as oaks, maples, dogwoods, Japanese maples, and shrubs such as viburnums, barberry, etc., are in leaf in the spring and summer months, blocking sunlight and giving our home natural shade. These plants that provide shade in the summer will drop their leaves in the fall, allowing sunlight to reach the home and warming it during these cold months.

Many statistics prove that properly placed shrubs and trees can reduce heating and cooling bills. I am not going to bore you with these statistics. If you think about it, it just makes logical sense.
