Spring is finally here to stay and this is such a beautiful time of year for The Great Big Greenhouse when it comes to flowering shrubs, perennials, annuals, and hanging baskets. Our selection is almost overwhelming with all this beauty. And, what a perfect time to have so much color especially with Mother’s Day this coming Sunday.
The origins of Mother’s Day in the United States date back to the 19th century. In the years before the Civil War, Ann Reeves of West Virginia helped start “Mothers’ Day Work Clubs” to teach local women how to properly care for their children. By 1912 most states had adopted Mother’s Day as an annual holiday. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
Since 1914, Mother’s Day traditionally involves presenting moms with flowers, cards, and other gifts.
But, let’s stick with flowers right now. Flowers, especially hardy flowering shrubs and perennials can be a gift that keeps on giving for years to come. As I walked through the nursery I see azaleas, rhododendrons, spirea all in bloom right now. With perennials, we have hundreds of varieties in bloom or coming into bloom. Some perennials in particular that look great for a gift to mom are peonies, salvia, dianthus, gaillardia. They are all in bloom now because this is their time to flower.
Blooming hanging baskets are beautiful – geraniums, impatiens, begonias, petunias, and a mixed combination of blooming annuals – make great Mother’s Day gift.
If in doubt, you can get your mother a gift card and bring her to The Great Big Greenhouse and let her make her own personal selection. If I were you I’d offer to do the planting…just saying.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY AND HAPPY GARDENING!!!!
