THE PERENNIAL PLANT ASSOCIATION HAS DESIGNATED JUNE AS PERENNIAL GARDENING MONTH AND FOR GOOD REASONS.
The main reason why the PPA has selected June is that so many beautiful perennials are in bloom in June. Secondly, June is a great gardening month for planting perennials.
Planting perennials in June couldn’t be better. May was a little on the dry side up until the last week when we got a good soaking on Tuesday, May 24th. And, we cooled down as well after setting record high temperatures on May 20th & 21st. So this needed rainfall and cool down will help to encourage vigorous growth of perennial plants.
I must admit that I love June and what it offers in the way of perennials being at their peak performance. It has been interesting over the years how breeding programs have increased the varieties of different perennials.
We have the ever-popular native plant trend with gardeners. The demand for native plant materials continues to thrive. And, June is a great month to consider planting native perennials as customers are looking for tough plants that can better handle our heat and weather this summer.
