Native Plant Highlight – Parasol Whitetop Aster

EXPLORING OUR NATIVE PLANT SELECTION

My native plant highlight for this month is DOELLINGERIA umbellate, commonly known as the Parasol Whitetop Aster. I picked this native because of its late summer/fall blooming time. This beautiful native plant symbolizes fall here in Central Virginia.

Parasol Whitetop is an upright grower with narrow oval leaves and clusters of daisy-like flowers on top of the stems—flat-topped white petals widely right the bright yellow centers. This Aster is genuinely a beautiful native plant. It is a herbaceous perennial that is easy to grow. Here are just a few characteristics of the Parasol Whitetop Aster:

  1. This plant prefers a slightly acidic loamy soil that stays a little moist to occasionally wet.
  2. They want to be planted in full sun to partial shade.
  3. They are hardy from Zone 3 to Zone 9.
  4. Whitetops will grow two to five feet tall and just about as wide.
  5. Whitetop is drought tolerant.
  6. Its flowers are nectar-rich and attract butterflies and bees.
  7. This plant is deer and rabbit-resistant.

Come in to see our excellent selection of native plants. Native plants are durable and easy to grow. They will add beauty to your landscape and support a healthy environment by providing food and shelter for wildlife such as bees, birds, butterflies, and other essential pollinators.
