Fall will be here soon and the fall planting season is fast approaching. I mentioned a couple times in recent blogs that August is the month to get ready and plan your planting projects for fall.
One big QUESTION that many homeowners ask themselves is “can professional help make a difference?” when it comes to wanting to do a new landscape of your property. So, what exactly constitute professional help? Here at the Great Big Greenhouse we pride ourselves with offering professional advice and plant recommendations. That’s our job to provide this service. But, does your landscape project require a home visit from a keen professional like a landscape designer. We, here, do not make home visits and none of us here are certified landscape designers or a member of the Virginia Society of Landscape Designers.
One thing you want to do is to understand the difference between a landscape designer and a landscape architect. Landscape architects generally work on larger public or private projects which involves significant detail to planning and designing. A landscape designer infers that the person or company can create a landscape plan for your property. A landscape design service can range from a simple sketch to a complete master plan. Many times the homeowner wants to do their own planting. Sometimes they make this decision in order to plant at their own pace as well as to save money. So, the homeowner is ready to make their plant choices. At this point is where we come into play. We pride ourselves in looking over this landscape designer plan with you, ask a few questions about the site, about your soil. Then we take a walk around the nursery and show customers the plants from the plan. And, we pride ourselves with making suggested plant alternatives if the homeowner does not like the plant on the landscape plan.
Are you a person who likes to do everything on your own? This is fine. Over the years we have helped landscape hundreds of homes. We just ask that customers bring us some pictures, some dimensions of the landscape areas, know the sun exposure, and what it is that you want to accomplish with the plants ( such as screening, accents, color, etc. ).
Fall is the best planting season of the whole year. One big reason as why fall is the best is that we begin to cool down and our soil is beginning to cool down as well. Cooler soil temperature leads to better root develop by the plant.
