November Gardening Chores

IT’S STILL FALL & IT’S STILL A GOOD TIME TO PLANT

As of late October, our soil temperature is still at 60 degrees. The combination of warm soil, cool temperatures, and timely rainfall helps make this time of year great for planting.

Many of us are now adjusting to the new time change. And I can’t believe that the holidays are just around the corner. But, we are having great weather, allowing us to enjoy being outside in our gardens and continue to plant. A word of caution: BE SURE TO KEEP ALL THESE NEWLY PLANTED PLANTS WATERED.

HERE ARE SOME GARDENING TIPS TO WORK ON IN NOVEMBER

  • If you love to feed the birds, now is an excellent time to set out the birdfeeders and enjoy watching our feathered friends (and the squirrels, too). TIP: A birdfeeder and some bird seed make a great holiday gift for someone.
  • Now is probably a good time to drain water fountains. Be sure to cover to keep out rainwater.
  • Leaves continue to fall. Leaves are an excellent source of organic matter and other nutrients. They can be added to the home compost pile or used as mulch. Mulching can make the soil more workable.
  • Closer to Thanksgiving is the time to apply the last feeding to our lawns. This latest feeding is usually higher in nitrogen to add growth and a robust root system.
  • November is an excellent month to plant tulip bulbs now that we have cooled down and our soil temperature has cooled.
  • A nice, sunny day in November is an excellent time to walk through your gardens. Take the time to reflect on your successes and failures. Make notes for new things to try and things to fix next spring.
