November Gardening Tasks

THE MUCH-NEEDED GARDENING TASKS TO BE DONE THIS MONTH

Let’s first do a little re-cap of October.  We have gotten some timely rainfall in the second half of October which is much needed.  Also, we had one of the coolest October in many years.  Around the 19th and 20th of October we had freezing weather for the first time for the general area.  But, the last week of October we had temperatures above normal.  This warmer weather has kept our soil temperature warmer as well, which is a good thing for this continuation of the FALL IS PLANTING season.

But, let’s not stop gardening and planting just because the calendar says November.  We have plenty of work to be done this month.

HERE ARE SOME NOVEMBER GARDENING TASKS

  1. Now is still an excellent time to plan spring-blooming bulbs such as daffodils, hyacinths, and now tulips.
  2. As our perennials begin to decline for the winter, now is an excellent time to dig up and divide.  Daylilies, hostas, peonies, iris, and other perennials will benefit from being divided this time of year.  And, don’t forget to add some ESPOMA BIO-TONE inside the hole at the time of replanting.
  3. The holiday season is just ahead.  It is so rewarding to use some of your own landscape plants as a source of greenery for holiday decorations.  Cutting your own greenery as needed is about as fresh as it gets.
  4. You may have seen a copy of the pruning calendar with my earlier bog  –  November is a good month to do some selective pruning on some shrubs such as Abelia, Arborvitae, boxwood, gardenias, summer blooming hydrangeas, and others.
  5. Don’t forget our feathered friends this month.  November is a good month to hang a bird feeder.

Take advantage of some nice, warm, sunny days and take a stroll around your gardens.  Take time to reflect on the successes and failures of your gardens this year.  Make notes for new things to try next spring.

PLANNING AND PLANT A LITTLE HAPPINESS!!!!!!!
