Come join us this Saturday morning, and come early when selections are best. Some of our faithful regular shoppers are in line by 7:30 a.m. before the gates are open! We will social distance in the shopping area and masks are appreciated to protect our members.
We will have all types of bearded iris for sale as well as beardless (see below). Our club members currently donate all the rhizomes for our sale from their personal gardens.
Iris will be sorted alphabetically in individual bags by type as follows:
Border Bearded – Intermediate Bearded – Miniature Dwarf Bearded
Miniature Tall Bearded – Standard Dwarf Bearded
Tall bearded will be sorted alphabetically by color and then by name. Other tall bearded categories are bi-color *(standards different color from the falls), bi-tone have standards and falls with same color but different lightness/darkness); blends have various colors blended on one or both the standards and falls; historic iris are those introduced to the public 30 years or more ago. Most but not all have the “dog-ear” like falls; and plicatas are marked with stippled, dotted, or stitched margin colors on falls of a lighter color.
All the “beardless” iris will be sorted alphabetically by type and then by name as follows: Japanese – Louisiana – Siberian, Species, and Spec-X (species crosses).
FAIS is a nonprofit club, founded in 1984 by a group of dedicated iris lovers. It is an affiliate of the American Iris Society (AIS), and as such, actively supports the AIS Mission: “The Mission of The American Iris Society is to organize and disseminate knowledge of the genus Iris, while fostering its preservation, enjoyment and continued development.”
The FAIS Annual Iris Sale is the society’s only source of funds. We do not charge local membership dues. The sale provides all of the operating funds to host guest speakers, judges’ training, and regional meetings. In addition, it also funds two horticulture scholarships we sponsor annually at Virginia Tech and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. Scholarship recipients usually participate in various meetings and/or the annual sale.
There will be handouts for the “bleach bath” (used only for bearded iris), horticulture sheets for growing each type of iris, and how to dig and divide your iris. FAIS will share it’s “Magic Mix” fertilizer formula. Meadows Farms Nurseries offers most of the component parts for purchase. Iris gardeners and hybridizers alike love the results and use it for all the different varieties of irises.
